A solid pine desk is at the head of the class

Made of solid pine, this circa-1840 English school desk is originally from Yorkshire. Built for two, it measures just forty-four inches wide, thirty-two inches deep, and twenty-five inches high and is topped with a smooth writing surface made of three thick boards; the front panel of the desktop features two carved pencil grooves and an inkwell holder. A shelf offers storage space beneath the hinged top. The desk also features the traditional attached bench seat and foot rail, and its natural surface shows the pine’s knots and wood grain, lending a subtle, country touch. At more than one hundred and fifty years old, this well-made, rustic desk is still suitable for use. $1,200 [OCTOBER 2010]
