Dangerous Liaisons Opens at Shakespeare & Company

Les Liaisons Dangereuses received its official opening on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, in the Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre at Shakespeare & Company. The play by Christopher Hampton, adapted from the novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, was directed by Tina Packer and stars Elizabeth Aspenlieder and Josh Aaron McCabe, and runs through March 21, 2010.

The production is carried on the estimable shoulders of Aspenlieder (as Madame la Marquise de Merteuil) and McCabe (as Le Vicomte de Valmont), with able support from a cast including Enrico Spada as Le Chevalier Danceny, Kelly Galvin as Madame de Tourvel, Jennie Burkhard Jadow as Madame de Volanges, and Lydia Barnett-Mulligan as Cecile de Volanges.

As one has come to expect from Shakespeare & Company, the set by Carl Sprague and costumes by Govane Lohbauer receive almost equal billing to the work of the ensemble of actors. Kudos also to lighting designer Stephen Ball, sound designer Michael Pfeiffer, choreographer Kristin Wold, and composer/instrumentalist Alexander Sovronsky. Even company artistic director Tony Simotes got into the act, choreographing a harrowing swordfight.

The production makes good use of the intimate space in the Bernstein Theatre, and the crowd on opening night was thrilled to be able to celebrate an original production deep in the heart of winter.

After the play, a reception with the cast and crew was held in the lobby. Please visit a gallery of photos taken at the reception here.
