The "house that used to be Cole Porter's" in Williamstown, Mass.

Every small community boasts about certain properties that everyone seems to know of; the “house that used to be Cole Porter’s” on West Main in Williamstown, Mass., is one such property. The famous composer and songwriter lived there in the 1940s, enjoying its six-thousand-plus square feet of interior space set on forty acres that include formal gardens, woodlands, a two-mile nature trail, a pool and pool house (with a fireplace, changing room, and kitchen), and a secluded tennis court, all located about a mile from town.

Built in 1876, much of the home’s original, Gatsby-like splendor remains intact thanks to upgrades and improvements over the years, including additions made to the property in the 1960s. Recent renovations comprise a guest cottage with two large suites plus the additions of a livestock barn with seven hundred square feet of living space and a carriage barn with a three-bedroom apartment above. Just like the music that was undoubtedly once composed here, Porter’s old crib has only improved with age. — $4,495,000 [JUNE 2010]
