The Millay Colony Offers Artist Workshops
Paint-spattered trees or frenzied writing on boulders is no cause for alarm. The Millay Colony for the Arts in Austerlitz, New York, plays host to six artists for month-long residencies from April through November (as well as offering five-day intensive workshops to other artists), so on any given day you may find a few stray playwrights and painters wandering the grounds, seeking inspiration.
Sitting on the wooded, seven-acre campus are the Main Building and the quaint Steepletop Barn, originally built by the program’s namesake, the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, in the 1920s from a Sears & Roebuck kit. But the artists spend most of their time outside, using nature as their muse.
According to residency director Calliope Nicholas, “Many artists have day jobs and do their art on the side … the colony allows them to work privately and peacefully. Many experience a paradigm shift that carries on after they have left.” (JUNE 2009)

•Painting: Mixed Media Works
