Retro Kitchenware that's affordable and functional

For baby boomers who long for the days when I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners provided an evening’s entertainment, furnishing a contemporary kitchen with the vintage gadgets from the 1940s and 1950s likely seen in such TV shows adds a touch of bright color and a heaping helping of nostalgia to the décor. The cheerful white enamel coffeepot ($75) has a red handle and red trim; coffee can be seen percolating merrily through the green glass knob on the lid. This stovetop model still has the metal basket for coffee grounds inside.

Whip up a delicious meringue with a classic hand-held eggbeater ($24) sporting cheery crimson handles. Use this trio of glossy scarlet nesting mixing bowls ($55) to prepare classic comfort foods, such as mashed potatoes made especially creamy with an old-fashioned food ricer ($15) with red enamel handles.

Retro kitchenware is affordable, functional, sturdy, and fun for cooks who appreciate a bit of kitsch in their kitchens. [Mar/Apr 2010]
