Though chef-owner Alexander Smith decided to relocate his eight-year-old Gramercy Bistro in North Adams, Mass., in February 2010, he didn’t take it far—just across the street, to the heart of the MASS MoCA campus. In its new, light-filled home, Gramercy’s modern French salon ambiance shines, accompanied by a reintroduction of Smith’s thoroughly Parisian lunch and brunch menus (croque-monsieur, salade Niçoise, onion soup au gratin). An eclectic, seasonal dinner menu showcases the simplicity of farm-fresh ingredients with signature dishes such as seared duck breast with local butternut squash, bacon-laced Brussels sprouts, and cider gastrique; veal schnitzel à la Holstein; and classic coq au vin. A carefully curated wine list favors small French producers; the full bar stays open until 1 a.m., ideal for nighttime patio lingering. [September 2010]
