This is a delightfully modest comic drama for a summer’s evening, pairing a devoted middle-aged son with his mother and a gaggle of other elderly women. Gianni di Gregorio pulls off a splendid hat trick, engaging us with his hangdog face while also serving as director and screenwriter of this divertissement about family, friendship, and aging, demonstrating how the sunset years can be full of surprise and vitality that can awaken even the most jaded of souls. The film also features delectable scenes of Italian home food prep, worth the ticket price alone.
