Mention Israel to most people and decorative arts, unfortunately, is not the first thing that generally comes to mind—that would be way down the list after war, terrorism, and Middle East politics. But amidst the grim realities of a nation constantly on alert for its safety and security, life goes on, and that includes art-making, as can be seen in   A Shared Perspective, an exhibition featuring works by contemporary Israeli artists and craftsmen at the Barn Gallery at Stonover Farm in Lenox, Massachusetts, through July 23.

Organized by the Association of Israel’s Decorative Artists (AIDA), the exhibition includes cutting-edge jewelry created by Orly Wexler, who combines unorthodox materials such as rubber, silicon, and leather with more traditional sterling silver, gold, and semiprecious stones to create work that speaks to modern urban and industrial life. Nati Amoils creates “sculptured apparel” from sheets of copper, using a combination of techniques: cutting, sewing, perforation, etching, oxidation, and enameling. Avital Coorsh takes a minimalist approach, using simple, spare designs and basic materials to allow a piece of jewelry to take shape only once it adorns the wearer. Also in the exhibition is Jewish-themed ceramic works by Emmett Leader, of Northampton, Massachusetts, who was profiled in the September 2008 issue of Berkshire Living.
