HIKING: Greenport Conservation Area

 

The Columbia Land Conservancy (CLC) sets a new standard for wheelchair-accessible recreation at its spectacular Greenport Conservation Area in Greenport, New York. Splendid views of the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains are attainable with little effort, making this property worth a visit for the disabled and able-bodied alike. 

 

The 714-acre conservation tract is owned by the Open Space Institute, but the CLC, based in Chatham, New York, is responsible for management of the parcel’s grasslands, wetlands, and forests, as well as its four-mile trail network.

 

The mile-long “Access for All” trail provides a wide, hardened path over fields to the head of bluffs overlooking the river. Rustic improvements, including a gazebo, semi-circular bench, and a picnic shelter, make these viewpoints a natural and alluring place for a picnic or meditative respite.

 

In addition to this trail, the property offers three more miles of walking trails around this former farm landscape. Located just a few minutes north of Hudson, New York, off Route 9, the property is a natural transition zone between train station and country house. Can’t stand those weekend guests underfoot for another hour, or need to stall while someone at home finishes the canapés? Take them for a memorable stroll at Greenport.

 

It’s just a ten-minute walk from the parking area to the primary overlooks, but on a pleasant day, armed with a pair of binoculars, one could easily wander the property’s fields,
deciduous forests, and cedar groves for a couple of hours. Bring sunscreen—many of the trails are in the open.

 

From north or south, approach Greenport on Route 9. Turn onto Joslen Boulevard and follow for approximately a mile before turning onto Daisy Hill Road at the sign for the
