A family day of traditional carriage driving in New Marlborough, Mass.

Elegant equines in full harness pulling authentic carriages and carts, with drivers and passengers in traditional dress, will clip-clop through the town of New Marlborough, Massachusetts, on October 11 during A Family Day of Traditional Carriage Driving. The event, part of the 250th anniversary celebration of New Marlborough, will include as many as twenty carriages driving the scenic route from the field behind the Old Inn on the Green to Mepal Manor and back again. Drivers will then compete on a demonstration course, where they will be judged on performance and attire. Hayrides and refreshments round out the day.

The connection between the town of New Marlborough and the hackney pony was established back in 1888, when Hildreth Bloodgood brought a number of the animals, including the prizewinning Star of Mepal, from England to his estate (now the Mepal Manor) in New Marlborough. One of his great-granddaughters, Billie Hill, will serve as a judge; another, Macy Hill, will handle the reins, driving a pony and carriage. [OCTOBER 2009]
