Food for Thought

It's crunch time here at Berkshire Living as we finish up the November/December 2010 issue. Abuzz with energy all day, we can't afford to run out of steam.

"An empty stomach is not a good political adviser."

Smart guy Albert Einstein could have been talking about hunger's affect on editorial work just the same... i.e. empty stomach = no creativity2

These words of wisdom were one of several quotes embellishing the mustard-yellow walls of today's lunchtime lifesaver: Mad Jack's BBQ, which is located a few minutes' walk from the Berkshire Living offices in Pittsfield, Mass.

The breezy autumn stroll over to Fenn Street offered a much-needed break for fresh air, a momentary musical hiatus as I awaited my order to sounds of gritty, upbeat jazz playing in the small restaurant space, and some welcome indulgence.

I went with my go-to barbecue item, Pulled Pork, which, at Mad Jack's, comes not just as the traditional sloppy, slaw-topped sandwich, but also on it's own (by the quart) and as a salad, something I'm keeping in mind next time I aim to eat healthy while also quelling one of my frequent barbecue cravings.

Zesty and juicy, and served with a heaping (and I mean, grandma-style heaping) pile of macaroni and cheese, my choice of side, the Ron Boy was a delicious sandwich and just the ticket for a tireless Tuesday.
